Liyiran (Shelly) Xia
I grew up in Langfang, China, a city between Beijing and Tianjin. Five years ago I decided to study Environmental Science at Franklin and Marshall College because I experienced the stark difference in air quality between my hometown and college town.
Breathing in the fresh air and laying next to large trees on campus in Pennsylvania, kayaking on the salt marshes in Cape Cod, and strolling around the parks in New York City had aroused my appreciation toward the efforts in making U.S. a prosperous place today compared to several decades ago. I have thus grown a passion in making social change and helping people recognize what can be done to improve our environment.
In my spare time, you can find me taking pictures or dancing Argentine Tango.

Mengchen (Michelle) Wang
I joined the Master of International Affairs program after I earned my Bachelor’s degree from Penn State University with a major in Economics and a minor in Japanese. My interest in international relations and various cultures combined with my knowledge of economics motivated me to choose this program. I am currently focusing on the concentration of energy and environmental policy, and economy.
When President Obama asked Ma Yun at APEC CEO SUMMIT in 2015 “why you have been so passionate about the climate change?”, his extraordinary reply to Obama really resonated with me. He answered that “it’s not the passion but the concern that worries… without a healthy environment of this Earth, no matter how much you make, no matter how wonderful you are, you [are] a bad disaster.” He’s right. Environmental issues has become one of the most important global issues nowadays and I believe that promoting clean and cost-effective energy sources is of the urgency, with the world population demanding increasingly more energy.

Biyun (Angela) Song
I was born and raised in Shanghai, China. I joined Penn State School of International Affairs (SIA) in 2015 after graduating from Shanghai International Studies University with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in French. With a working experience at Reuters News Agency – Shanghai bureau, I covered the stories of new energy infrastructure, and I strongly realize the necessity of environmental protection and the reform of energy resource structure.
